Why Isn’t My Car’s AC Working Anymore?

The last thing you want to happen when you’re driving down Interstate 68 heading to Morgantown, WV is to turn on your A/C and feel nothing at all – or worse – hot air. It happens to drivers every summer and the main culprit is usually a lack of refrigerant, but it can also be a myriad of other problems.

At South Park Service Center, these are the most common problems that we see that need an immediate A/C repair are:

Refrigerant is Low

Your air conditioning system needs refrigerant to produce cool air. When your vehicle is either producing less cool air than before or the air is even starting to feel warm, it may be time to “recharge” your A/C.

A performance check will let you know if a recharge is necessary.

Bad A/C Compressor

The primary part of every A/C unit is the compressor. This pressurizers the refrigerant in the system that cools the air. A compressor will also monitor and control temperature output. If the compressor is bad, you will need to have it replaced.

There is also the chance that the serpentine belt is bad, but you will experience far worse problems than a broken A/C at this point.

Common signs that a compressor is bad include:

  • Freon or oil leaks
  • Noise from the compressor
  • Erratic A/C temperatures or operation

Replacing a compressor is necessary if the unit is going bad, or has ceased working completely.

Failed Blower Motor / Resistor

The blower motor pushes air through the vehicle’s ventilation system. When the blower motor stops working, you may hear the air conditioning system kick on, but you won’t feel the cool air coming out of the vents.

This is normally a blower motor that has stopped working and needs to be serviced or replaced.

Failed Condenser

Found in the front of most vehicles, the condenser turns hot refrigerant gas into cool liquid. When a unit is not producing adequate cool air, this may mean that the condenser is:

  • Leaking
  • Clogged
  • Corroded

A clog or leak may be able to be serviced by a professional, but the condenser may simply need to be replaced to correct the issue.
